It’s been a crazy weekend.
My son Kyle, a senior at York College of Pennsylvania, competed in the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships this past week in Greensboro, North Carolina. And that’s where I’ve been since last Wednesday. Today, we travel back home to California, and we’re wiped out. Thus, no “real” blog entry today.
But…
excuse me if I brag a little:
Kyle is now the NCAA Div III Champion for the 100 yard Breaststroke!
And with an additional top-8 finish in the 200 Breaststroke, this makes his a 6-time All-American.
AND… Sunday, he swam in an NCAA Long Course time-trial, in an attempt to qualify for US Olympic Trials (NCAA swims “short course” 50-yard pools, international competition “long course” 50-meter pools). The US Olympic qualifying time for the 100m BR is 1:03.69. Kyle swam a 1:03.26, so while his collegiate career is over, he’ll swim at least one more time, at the US Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, in late June!
He started swimming only as a sophomore in high school (and only because his water polo coach told him he had to), but he took to it like, well, a fish to water. It’s been a huge amount of work on his part (he certainly didn’t get that talent from me, as I’m afraid of the water and cannot even dog-paddle), but that work has paid off.
So yeah, very proud.
And exhausted.
